Ruth Redekop, Healing PractitionerI am a practitioner of holistic healing, based in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver, British Columbia. My definition of healing goes far beyond getting rid of pain or other symptoms as defined by traditional western medicine. Many people have written about the phenomenon of an ailment going away upon treatment, only to have it spring up somewhere else in the body. If we suppress our symptoms, the underlying cause will redouble its efforts at getting our attention. I see our diseases, our aches and pains, as gifts from our body. The nature of the ailment offers important clues as to where we need to look inside of ourselves. Health encompasses a willing body, mind and spirit. When in acute pain, we need to do physical things to alleviate it. Then we must examine our thoughts and actions in order to prevent its reoccurrence.How do we do this? Well, the body has a built-in mechanism to help us. It has an impeccable memory. It has stored all of our unresolved emotions, all of our genetic and psychological patterning, all of the physical injuries. It also has innate ability to heal itself, to know what it needs. Bodywork can tap into this wisdom. So can some forms of meditation. True healing rarely looks like we had envisioned it. The experience of healing is one of acceptance, understanding and even appreciation of the circumstances of our lives. New awareness alters the way we view the world and our place in it. In essence, I see healing not as a returning to a previous condition, but as an evolution into something even greater.
